Zhen Wen Academy was built in 1797 right at the intersection of Xingnong West Rd and Wenchang Rd as an ancestral hall of the Gods of Literature (Wenchang Gods). It is a tribute to Wenchang Zitong, Wenheng, Fuzhu, Zhuyi and Luyi, which are the popular names referred to the Five Great Divinities of Literature. Local people call this place “Wen Ci Miao” (“Ancestral Temple of Literature). The “Literature Bracing Society” was established there, but also the “Zeal Society” and the “Inspiring Confidence in Justice Society”- societies where the men of letters and refined scholars whose hobby was poetry and lyrics could meet. In 1812, when the president of the “Literature Bracing Society” achived the success and suggested to found an academy of classical learning, Liao Chenghe and other people from the local gentry were enthusiastic in donating money to build it. Works were completed one year later. During the same year an ancient fullmoon-shaped plum board was hanged on a roof beam and the inscription on it declaimed “thousands-falls-old book ancestral hall”. In Yunlin county there are not anymore many  academies of classical learning because of the change of the schoolar system.

In 1985 the Ministry of the Interior officially classified it as a third level historic site, and even allocated the necessary funds to mantain it and to build landscape-adorned doors. They were completed in 1989, turning the academy in Xiluo’s most valuable cultural asset.
