  <關於她祖母的故事>這一個藝術計畫的創作理念,是關於一位祖母出生及生活在臺灣虛構的故事。對我來說,來到西螺的感覺像是一個離鄉很久的孫子回到祖父母家。在西螺進駐的這段時間,我帶著我的相機在鎮上參觀了許多地方,在地人們與我分享他們精彩的故事。從故事中,我發現關於西螺歷史和文化的各種意義,是複雜並且多層次的。我利用相機記錄各種祖孫之間的關係,希望透過這些照片及文字展示,讓觀者看見的,不僅是第一眼的印象,更看見背後的故事意義。

關於我的作品的背後故事

  〈The Story about Her Grandmother〉是我一直持續進行的藝術計畫,是描繪一位生長於1920年代的臺灣的祖母,其一生的虛構故事。在她長長的一生當中,見證了很多台灣的事件與轉變。這項藝術計畫的創作想法,啟發自我與朋友的台灣祖母接觸的真實經驗。

  2002年,我第一次造訪臺灣,遇見我最好的朋友的外婆及她的親戚們,我朋友的母親是臺灣人,父親是日本人,我們在日本同一所高中。當我拜訪我朋友在臺灣的家人,她們熱情地歡迎我並且帶我參觀台灣。外婆用流利的日語和我交談,但當時我太年輕,不明白為何外婆能夠說流利的日語。

  14年過去了,這當中我有一些機會可以了解更多的臺灣。在知道一些臺灣的歷史,以及明白為何我朋友的外婆能夠說流利的日語之後,我開始思考,用日語去聆聽及記錄臺灣老一輩的故事,可能是重要的。

  做為西螺駐地藝術家,藉此認識西螺小鎮的歷史、文化與人,是一個有趣的過程。我以帶著相機在小鎮上四處走逛開始我的計畫,剛開始時,對於想要去了解這個小鎮我感到有些困難,因為來到一處新的地方,我害羞於去與人接觸,並且對我來說,這小鎮是如此地陌生。

  我每天走過幾條街,每每在發現一些西螺的新事物之後,我拍下照片,並且畫下我自己的「發現西螺」地圖。後來,我幸運地遇見當地的一些紳士,他們親切地用日語與我分享他們的故事。每個人都有他們自己獨特的故事,我將這些故事一一記在我的筆記本上。在說故事時,他們也拿出他們的家族及他們孩提時代珍藏的記憶,像是100年前的教科書,或是90多年前的家族相簿。而在我一一拜訪他們時,我們見面的那些地方,它的氛圍及地點也都具有相當重要的意義。

  這次2016西螺當代藝術季,我在延平路72ART展出的20件攝影作品都拍自西螺,每張作品的說明文字也都引用自我從當地聽來的故事。他們用日語告訴我這邊的故事,我將這些故事翻譯成英文,再由這次藝術季的藝術家夥伴彭奕軒協助翻譯成中文。

  從這些故事當中,我注意到西螺的歷史文化具有很多層次,比起我對西螺的第一印象要複雜得多。參與2016西螺當代藝術季及駐地創作,不僅是對西螺,也是對臺灣多元歷史文化了解的開始。(宇田奈緒)

 

Behind the scenes of “The Story About Her Grandmother”

"The Story About Her Grandmother" is my ongoing art project to illustrate the fictional life story of an imaginary Taiwanese grandmother who was born in 1920s in Taiwan. In her long life, she witnessed many event and changes of Taiwan. The art project was inspired by my real experience with my friend’s Taiwanese grandmother. I visited Taiwan for the first time in 2002. At the time, I met the grandmother and relatives of my best friend who was born with Taiwanese mother and Japanese father. The friend and I were in the same high school in Japan. When I visited her family in Taiwan, they welcomed me and showed me around Taiwan. The grandmother talked to me in fluent Japanese, but I was too young to know why she could speak in Japanese. 14 years has passed since then, and I had some chances to know more about Taiwan. After knowing some of Taiwanese history and the reason why my friend's grandmother could speak in fluent Japanese, I started to think that it might be important to listen to and record the stories from older generations in Taiwan by using Japanese language.

The artist in residency in Xiluo was interesting process to know the history, culture, and people of the town. I started the project by walking around the town with my camera in my hands. At the beginning, it was little hard to understand Xiluo because I felt shy in the new place and the town feels very foreign to me. I walked several streets everyday, took pictures, and draw my own map after finding some of the new things about Xiluo. After spending some time in Xiluo, I was fortunate to meet some of the local gentlemen who were very kind and shared their personal stories with me in Japanese. Each person has own story and it was quite unique. I recorded all the stories on a notebook. While telling the stories, they also showed me the treasures from their home and childhood. Some of them showed me 100 years-old textbooks, while others shared the very personal family photo albums from 90 years ago. When I visited each one of them, the atmosphere and the location of the places where we meet were also very significant. All the twenty photos in the exhibition are taken in Xiluo. Also, the sentences I displayed along with the photos are the quote from the stories I heard from the local people. They told me the stories in Japanese and I translated them to English. Chinese translation was made from English with the help of a fellow artist, Yi-Hsuan Peng.

From the stories, I noticed that there are many layers of the history and culture in Xiluo. The layers are much more complicated than the first impression. The residency and the art festival were the great start to know the layers of not only Xiluo, but also all over Taiwan.(Nao Uda)

 

藝術家介紹

宇田奈緒 Nao Uda

 

來自日本的宇田奈緒,出生於1983年,2007年獲得紐約視覺藝術學院攝影學士學位後,回到自己的家鄉日本橫濱。創作的媒材多元化,像是裝置、攝影以及代表自己的另一面性格的虛構人物Nu的繪畫。自2006年開始就在日本、美國、加拿大、台灣舉辦過個展,同時也在紐約、拉斯維加斯、加拿大、日本以及約旦參與過聯合展覽,也曾經在日本、美國、台灣以及加拿大參與駐村計畫。
